However, unofficial reports suggest that the real number may be even higher than official reports. A 2024 report by the Accident Research Institute (ARI) of BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) revealed that more than 80% of these accidents involve human error and the rest are due to road conditions, mechanical failure, and environmental factors.

Common Causes of Road Accidents:

1. Reckless driving and high speeding

2. Many drivers in Bangladesh, especially bus and truck drivers, tend to drive recklessly for extra earnings. Over-speeding, overtaking from the wrong side, and ignoring traffic signals are common practices.

The consequences of road accidents in Bangladesh go beyond the immediate loss of life. Victims who survive accidents often suffer lifelong disabilities, impacting their ability to earn a living. Families lose their earning person, and children are becomeing orphaned. The economic loss is also staggering—experts estimate that Bangladesh loses about 2-3% of its GDP annually due to road accidents.

In recent years, the government has taken various action to improve road safety;

Amending the Road Transport Act 2018 to impose stricter penalties on reckless drivers.
Aranging awareness campaigns about road safety and traffic rules.
Launching programs for road infrastructure development.
