Road Accident in Bangladesh
Road accidents have become a significant public safety concern in Bangladesh, thousands of people sacfifice thiers lives in every year and countless others injured or disabled. Main reason for road accident are increasing number of vehicles on the roads, poor infrastructure, and a lack of strict enforcement of traffic laws.
According to data from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and various NGOs, Bangladesh records an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 road accident-related deaths annually. However, unofficial reports suggest that the real number may be even higher than official reports. A 2024 report by the Accident Research Institute (ARI) of BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) revealed that more than 80% of these accidents involve human error and the rest are due to road conditions, mechanical failure, and environmental factors.
Common Causes of Road Accidents:
1. Reckless driving and high speeding
2. Many drivers in Bangladesh, especially bus and truck drivers, tend to drive recklessly for extra earnings. Over-speeding, overtaking from the wrong side, and ignoring traffic signals are common practices.
3. A large number of vehicles are mechanically unfit. Due to corruption and loopholes in the system, many unfit vehicles receive fitness certificates without proper inspections.
4. Many highways and roads are riddled with potholes, lack of signage, lighting, and pedestrian crossings. The situation worsens on rainy season when roads become slippery and waterlogged.
5. Many drivers lack formal training and understanding of traffic laws. Pedestrians, cyclists, and road users often cross streets without caution, further increasing risks.
6. Public buses and trucks often carry passengers excess of their capacity, making the vehicles harder to control.
The consequences of road accidents in Bangladesh go beyond the immediate loss of life. Victims who survive accidents often suffer lifelong disabilities, impacting their ability to earn a living. Families lose their earning person, and children are becomeing orphaned. The economic loss is also staggering—experts estimate that Bangladesh loses about 2-3% of its GDP annually due to road accidents.
In recent years, the government has taken various action to improve road safety;
Amending the Road Transport Act 2018 to impose stricter penalties on reckless drivers.
Aranging awareness campaigns about road safety and traffic rules.
Launching programs for road infrastructure development.
Several NGOs and civil society organizations, such as BRAC and Nirapad Sarak Chai, are also actively working to promote road safety.
To reduce road accidents laws and regulations need to be strictly enforced. Traffic police should be used modern technology like speed cameras and breathalyzers to curb reckless driving and drunk driving.
Implementing mandatory training programs for professional drivers and reforming the licensing process can ensure only skilled drivers are allowed to get driving license.
Developing and maintaining roads, building pedestrian bridges, and improving signage and lighting can drastically reduce road accidents.
Continuing awareness campaigns targeting both drivers and pedestrians can create a culture of road safety.
Road accidents in Bangladesh remain a grave challenge that demands urgent and coordinated efforts from the government, civil society, and individual citizens. Through improved law enforcement, infrastructure development, and public awareness, it is possible to make Bangladeshi roads safer for everyone.
