Science and Innovation in Bangladesh

Published

on

In recent times, Bangladesh has made significant progress in the fields of science and innovation. The government of Bangladesh has recently placed a strong emphasis on this area, resulting in notable advancements.

Science and innovation have always played a crucial role in accelerating Bangladesh’s development trajectory. The agricultural revolution in the 1970s and 1980s, achieved through high-yielding crop varieties and modern agricultural techniques, stands as a testament to the power of scientific research. Institutions like the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) and the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) have played a vital role in developing technologies that have increased food production and ensured food security for millions of people.

In the health sector, Bangladesh has made remarkable progress through science and innovation. The development of various vaccines, the eradication of diseases like smallpox, and the successful management of pandemics such as COVID-19 highlight the critical role of science. Bangladeshi scientists and researchers have gained international recognition, with institutions like the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), making significant strides in the research and treatment of challenging diseases like diarrhea.

Recently, Bangladesh has transformed challenges into opportunities. With a population of over 170 million, limited natural resources, and vulnerability to climate change, the country has successfully addressed urgent issues. Notable achievements in innovation include mobile financial services like bKash, which have revolutionized financial inclusion. By leveraging mobile technology, millions of previously unbanked Bangladeshis now have access to financial services, enabling them to save, invest, and contribute to the economy.

Science and innovation have also had a significant impact on the ready-made garment (RMG) sector, which is the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy. The adoption of advanced production technologies, sustainable practices, and digital solutions has helped the industry maintain a competitive position in the global market.

Bangladesh is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, facing threats such as rising sea levels, cyclones, and saltwater intrusion. Scientists are addressing these challenges by developing salt-tolerant crops and flood-resistant housing, while innovators are creating sustainable solutions like solar-powered irrigation systems and eco-friendly construction materials. These efforts demonstrate how science and innovation are driving resilience and progress in the face of climate change.

Artificial Intelligence

Published

on

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. That’s enables computers and machine to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving decision making, creativity and autonomy.

Positive Side:

Artificial Intelligence never makes mistakes. Humans can make mistakes at some point. However, if AI is programmed correctly, then AI never makes mistakes. Since AI’s decisions come from a designed algorithm, there is never a possibility of making mistakes in its work. Time and money are saved due to accurate information and accurate performance at all times, which creates a win-win situation in your company.

Facilitates quick decision-making. Humans suffer from indecision when making any decision. Even after thinking a lot, people do not get confidence. This system can make decisions much faster than humans through various machine learners. As a result, work is done much faster and a lot of time is saved.

This AI has the ability to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Humans can never do any work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Humans need sleep and rest. AI is a machine, so it does not need any rest.

Also, there are so many benefits of artificial intelligence that cannot be ended. But every good thing has its downside. Now we will learn about some of the disadvantages of artificial intelligence.

Negative Side:

When talking about the disadvantages of AI systems, the first thing that comes to mind is that AI systems are very expensive. The company always has to pay a lot of money to keep the AI system updated regularly with the latest hardware and software and to train the employees.

It reduces employment. Although repetitive work can be replaced with AI, it is beneficial for the company but affects employment. They will lose their regular jobs due to lack of skills in information and technology alone. And they will be driven to unemployment.

Lack of creativity. One of the shortcomings of using AI systems is the lack of creativity. They can never think creatively. Especially.

Absence of emotions. Although AI systems are working fast and continuously improving, they cannot use emotions while making any decisions. It cannot create a molecular connection with real people.

Future of AI

With the continuous development of knowledge and science, people are getting out of the tedious manual labor tasks and are trying to get these tasks done through various technological devices. This technological development of devices will accelerate in the coming days.

It is believed that this continuous development of artificial intelligence will surpass human capabilities at some point. For this reason, various countries around the world have banned the use of such artificial intelligence technologies, including ChatGPT. Again, many countries have allowed the use of these technology products in the light of specific policies.

One thing to remember in this case is that too much control can also have the opposite effect. Because we have seen that cryptocurrency has not been stopped by not being included in the conventional transaction system, but rather it is being used as a financial currency in Internet-based criminal activities.

Whether artificial intelligence is harmful or beneficial for us may decide the future. It goes without saying that it will depend a lot on us because dynamite, which was invented for mining, has also been used on the battlefield to kill people, to win wars.

So even good technology can go bad if it is used by bad people for bad purposes. And if something like that happens, then we too have to be prepared to survive by fighting with artificial intelligence robots like those in Hollywood and Bollywood movies.

If something like that does not happen, we have to focus on acquiring technical skills to keep up with our future technology-dependent world. Because in the real sense, the future world will be a place where only the fittest can survive.
